Salary level: £21,000 – £23,000

Hours: 37 hours per week (full time)

Background to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust

The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust runs high impact programmes that inspire and enable young people from under-represented backgrounds to succeed.  We work with young people and communities to broaden their view of what’s possible and help them gain the knowledge, skills and qualifications they need.

The Trust seeks to be a fitting memorial to Stephen by striving to develop a cohesive society that values and supports young people from diverse backgrounds and is dedicated to creating a more equal society.  The Trust also works with government, business and communities to create a society in which everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity and support to flourish.

Stephen Lawrence Day provides an opportunity for schools, youth and community groups, charities and others to come together to deliver a range of positive activities including; school-based early years activities, programmes to encourage young people to reject the recent increases in serious violence, and events to promote community integration.

 

Built Environment Programmes

Our Building Futures programme supports young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and under-represented groups to study architecture, gain work experience and qualify as architects. We work with 50 architecture practices and others in the built environment to provide students with the financial support, skills and experience they need to succeed.

Working to our core objectives, but aligning with RIBA priorities, we seek to embed a culture of cross-sectoral working between the professional built environment, firms, colleges, young people and the trust, in order to break down traditional barriers young people face to access a career in the Built Environment.

Expanding on the Building Futures Programme and structure, we have begun working with urban regeneration architecture practices to deliver meaningful Social Value enhancement.

 

Purpose of this post is:

The role of the Participation Officer is largely about communication and to collaborate with RIBA and other professional programmes to support student participation in the Built Environment sector.  The purpose of the role is to keep young people connected to each other, RIBA and the Trust and encourage and promote the professional development of an individual.  As well as keeping the alumni community aware of industry developments and needs, including fundraising opportunities and achievements.

In order to enhance our aims to inspire younger students to consider a career in the Built Environment we are looking for a Participation Officer to design and develop a programme, raising awareness of opportunities within the Built Environment sector within schools as well as building an Alumni community.

  • Supporting the delivery of the Trusts Building Built Environment programmes and support the growth of our work with industry and corporates
  • Communicating with an alumni and student community of more than 300 young people
  • Developing and delivering alumni engagement workshops with architecture practises Responsibility for the alumni website and online community as well as operating an alumni magazine/newsletter
  • To extend the Stephen Lawrence Building Futures programme into schools and to continue to support aspiring young people from diverse backgrounds wishing to pursue careers in the built environment
  • To develop the offer pool for Building Futures by expanding eligibility criteria to include younger recipients and delivering workshops/ talks in Schools as part of Stephen Lawrence Day
  • Promoting our new online portal for Built Environment opportunities and communicate offerings for alumni and students who join SLCT friendship scheme
  • Developing relationships with further and higher education institutions and architecture firms to effectively promote and expand the Building Futures programme
  • Liaising with industry mentors and school personnel who are engaged on the programme
  • Developing resources to be used in schools and Built Environment lessons that cater for different ages, abilities, class sizes and durations, including identifying learning objectives
  • Delivering programme activities in relation to the varying work streams, ensuring that the best practice guidelines are developed and adhered to
  • Collating information and data to be used in writing news features and progress updates and sharing them across social media platforms; supporting the delivery of the marketing strategy
  • Monitoring, reviewing and evaluating activities periodically, with guidance from the Head of Programmes

General matters

  • Keep abreast of developments, changes and best practice in the field of talent development and employment, applying updated knowledge to current work and sharing information with other staff of the Trust
  • Knowledge of the Built Environment (careers, education and development)
  • Undertake any other duties which may arise from time to time, commensurate with the scope of the post and within the capabilities of the post holder
  • This post is subject to a Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) check

 

Knowledge and role requirements

  • Strong communication skills both written and oral
  • IT skills including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of the architecture and built environment sector

 

Additional job requirements

  • Willingness and ability to work outside of normal office hours
  • Willingness to work flexibly in response to changing organisational requirements
