The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust is a small charity with a national profile dedicated to improving the lives of young people and communities from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds. The charity has recently been awarded a national day of commemoration and celebration of the life and legacy of Stephen Lawrence.

Through our portfolio of high-impact programmes we:

  • Work with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds aged 13 to 30 to inspire and enable them to succeed in the career of their choice.
  • Empower individuals and communities to create better places for people to live and work.
  • Support people to create a fairer society in which everyone, regardless of their background, can flourish

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Head of Programmes to join the team and help us along our journey to achieving further growth.

Our Programmes:

Over the last three years, we have undergone an exciting journey to move from being London-focused to having national reach and presence through Stephen Lawrence Day and developing a portfolio of programmes.

We primarily work with young people from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds aged 13 to 30 to inspire and enable them to succeed in the career of their choice.  We empower individuals and communities to create better places for people to live and work.  And we influence others to create a fairer society in which everyone, regardless of their background, can flourish.

  • Built environment– we support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds into the career Stephen hoped to enter through our Building Futures Programme.
  • Schools andfurther education – we give young people the knowledge, skills and confidence to pursue the career of their choice through our Pathways to Professions Programme.
  • Communities– we run programmes that empower community groups and their leaders to maximise their impact through our Leadership Academy’s, BME Network.
  • Stephen Lawrence Day, a day of celebration of Stephen’s life and legacy, was announced by Theresa May at the 25th anniversary memorial service in April 2018. The purpose of the day is about recognising the part we all play in creating a society in which everyone can flourish. It is an opportunity for children and young people to have their voices heard, make the changes they’d like to see and build a society that treats everyone with fairness and respect.

Our Objectives:

Our strategic objectives outlined below to realise our mission and to incorporate Stephen Lawrence Day into our core activities.

  • Strategic Objective 1: To deliver the Stephen Lawrence Building Futures programme supporting aspiring architects and young people wishing to pursue careers in the Built Environment.
  • Strategic Objective 2: To deliver all-age community programmes with an emphasis on offering support for hard to reach citizens.

 

  • Strategic Objective 3: To deliver Stephen Lawrence Day including Employment & Enterprise programmes to young people aged 13-30.

 

  • Strategic Objective 4: To grow our social enterprise activity to be a highly effective social business.

 

  • Strategic Objective 5: To maximise the use of the Stephen Lawrence Centre.

 

  • Strategic Objective 6: To continue to grow our Voice of Transformation work in pursuit of achieving social justice for all.

The main purpose of this post is:

  • Line management of programmes team providing leadership, motivation and development.
  • Responsible for the strategic development, fundraising, communications (including social media), planning, management and delivery of programmes in line with SLCT objectives
  • Lead, manage and develop the programme team
  • Manage and monitor the budgets for programmes and staff, streamline processes, performance management and reporting to Head of Operations.
  • Liaise with the Head of Operations and team on relevant fundraising and marketing initiatives
  • Oversee on-going programme design, implementation and evaluation
  • Develop and maintain key relationships with funders, stakeholders and partners
  • Represent the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust and support events delivered externally e.g the annual memorial lecture

 Main Duties

  • Management of programme delivery, ensuring all projects are delivered on time and on budget
  • manage the strategic development and sustainability of programmes
  • Line management of programmes team providing leadership, motivation and development.
  • Delivering all contracts in line with grant agreements, ensuring that all monitoring and evaluation is compliant with grant requirements and that reporting is of a high standard to ensure future support from funders
  • Supporting the Head of Operations to secure funding for programmes from a mixed portfolio of income generation including the Stephen Lawrence Centre, grants, corporate sponsorship and individual donations
  • Maintaining the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trusts internal and external monitoring and evaluation systems, which allow for adequate reporting and impact sharing to the Chief Executive, Board of Trustees, funders and other bodies as appropriate
  • Communicating the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trusts mission, values and aims to external and internal stakeholders, including volunteers, partners, funders and, if applicable, the press
  • Promoting and representing the Trust, acting as an ambassador at external events and meetings, ensuring the Trust communicates its messages effectively
  • Any other duties that may be reasonably required relevant to the post

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of strategic planning of programmes, programme development and delivery
  • Demonstrable experience of programme delivery preferably in the voluntary sector, including youth-led programmes
  • Experience of managing projects with multiple partners and stakeholders
  • Experience of leading and line managing teams to meet project outputs and outcomes
  • Monitoring, evaluating and assessing impact of projects, and reporting to external and internal stakeholders
  • Grant management and compliance
  • Partnership working with the voluntary, statutory, corporate and education sectors
  • Relationship building with a range of stakeholders – corporates, other charities, educational institutions, local authorities
  • Managing budgets and financial reporting
  • The ability to multitask and to meet deadlines
  • Experience of working with funders, education sector, local government and grassroot community groups.

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential

  • Managing teams and programme management
  • Securing funds from trusts and foundations
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal with the ability to influence across all levels
  • An understanding of the issues that young people from marginalised and underrepresented backgrounds face, and of policies and practices addressing these issues
  • Successfully contributing to income generation strategies, Trusts and Foundations, strategic alliances
  • Budgeting and financial planning
  • Motivational leadership qualities with ability to produce the best out of teams and young people

Desirable

  • IT and digital media skills
  • Coaching and mentoring skills
  • Event management including community events

  • Willingness flexibly, e.g outside of normal working hours
  • Practical problem solver, able to quickly adapt to the needs of a growing charity
