The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust runs high impact programmes that inspire and enable young people from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds to succeed.
We work with schools to broaden young people’s views of what’s possible and help them gain the knowledge, skills and qualifications they need. We support them through further education, and we help them as they progress through the early stages of their career, when many feel the challenges most keenly. Our Transitions programme has supported over 1,000 young people who have received one–to–one advice, career guidance, industry talks and work experience. Read more about our School programme.
We also work with government, business and communities to create a fairer society in which everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity and support to succeed. Our Lewisham Young Leaders programme works to bridge the gap between young people in disadvantaged communities and the police. Our BME Network supports voluntary groups working with BME communities.
Stephen was never able to fulfil his dream of becoming an architect, but we are committed to helping young people to succeed in the career he loved. Since our foundation in 1998, we have awarded bursaries to more than 130 students who might otherwise struggle to enter and complete the long journey of becoming an architect through our Building Futures programme. Over 300 young people have joined the programme, with over 120 alumni members, and 300 industry partners. In 2019, we will extend this programme to encompass all careers within the built environment.
The Trust is working in partnership with Baroness Lawrence and the government to deliver Stephen Lawrence Day, as announced by the Prime Minister at the memorial service marking 25 years since Stephen’s death. The day will serve as an opportunity for schools and communities to engage deeply in activities that strengthen and empower them to ‘Live their best life’. Find out more about the day and ways to get involved here.
In 2018, we launched ‘Your Space’ at the Stephen Lawrence Centre, providing start-ups, local communities and entrepreneurs with affordable working and event space. Find out more about Your Space here.
In 2019 the Trust will:
- Provide over 1,000 young people will careers guidance through our School’s programme
- Support over 250 young people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds through the trust’s flagship Building Futures programme
- Award up to £150,000 of bursaries and scholarships to support students who would otherwise struggle to stay in education.
