2013 is the 20th anniversary of Stephen Lawrence’s murder. The Stephen Lawrence Trust is planning a series of events to celebrate and mark Stephens’s life and celebrate his legacy – the achievements of the Trust. We plan to promote the future ambitions of the Trust and to raise funds so the important work can continue to make a difference.
The events will include:
Memorial Service, 22 April. This will be held at St Martins-in-the-Fields and is a service to be held in honour of Stephen’s memory
Memorial Lecture, 17 September. This will be held at RIBA and delivered by Daniel Libeskind – architect of Ground Zero in New York City.
SL20 Live Concert – autumn 2013
The Legacy Ball, October. Held the the Dorchester with an exciting line up, this will be a fabulous evening.
Celebrity dinners throughout the year. These intimate celebrity dinners will be hosted by celebrities such as Ed Miliband, Hugh Quarshie and Jon Snow along with Doreen Lawrence.
What we want to achieve
Access to Professions
The Trust has a track record of supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds into architecture as well as inspiring school children about the built environment. Over 100 bursaries have been awarded and so far 9 students have completed their 7 years to become fully fledged architects – 2 with their own practice.
We want to expand this model in order to support talented and driven young people from disadvantaged backgrounds into other professions too – law, finance, medicine, nursing, ITC, journalism and media. This will include:
Inspiring young people at in schools, preparing them to be leaders of the future and giving practical support through academia and into the professional working environment.
Supporting business to be leading exemplars of diversity and inclusion, able to recruit and retain diverse talent.
We are developing a programme with key local partners in order to ensure that the newly elected Police Crime Commissioners include proactive ways to ensure fair policing – race equality and good community relations. This work is funded by the Home Office.
