This year's Stephen Lawrence Memorial Lecture on 11th September 2008 at
RIBA discussed 'Rethinking Sustainability' with guests: Peter Morrison,
CEO, RMJM Group; Wayne Hemingway MBE, Hemingway Design; Yaw
Osseo-Asare, Harvard Graduate School; D Caroline Lucas, MEP for SE
London
It is held in partnership with the UK based international architectural company RMJM and supported by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Link to accept invitation.
The evening also celebrated the launch of 'Architecture for Everyone' a new national 3-year campaign led by the Trust and RMJM to encourage young people to discover ways in which their creative ability can be harnessed to renew urban space.

Peter Morrison
CEO, RMJM Group Limited
Peter Morrison is CEO of RMJM Group Limited, an appointment he took up
in August 2006 following three years as a non-executive director of the
company. His professional background in private equity and corporate
finance has given him much M&A experience covering a range of
commercial and industry sectors. A law graduate, Peter holds an MBA
from Imperial College, London. He has served with the British Army,
seeing active duty in Northern Ireland. A regular speaker at
international conferences, Peter has addressed the annual Environmental
Financial Consulting Group in New York and lectured at the Graduate
School of Design at Harvard University.
Wayne Hemingway MBE
Hemingway Design
Wayne set up Hemingway Design, specialising in affordable and social
design, after selling his award winning design label Red or Dead. Of
Hemingway Design's numerous projects, their highest profile one is The
Staiths South Bank, an award winning 800 property mass market housing
project on Tyneside for Taylor Wimpey Homes where Hemingway Design are
involved from the master planning, the architecture through to the
landscaping and marketing of this groundbreaking project. Wayne is also
the Chairman of Building for Life, a CABE funded organisation. He is a
writer for architectural and housing publications as well as a judge of
international design competitions including the regeneration of Byker
in Newcastle and Salford in Greater Manchester, the Stirling Prize,
Europan and is also a TV design commentator.
Yaw (Dk) Osseo-Asare
Harvard College, USA
Yaw (Dk) Osseo-Asare is a third-year student in the Master in
Architecture I program at the Graduate School of Design (GSD), Harvard.
Here he revitalised the student organisation ‘Social Change and
Activism’ and was instrumental in the creation of the ‘Design
Initiative for Youth’ program, where he works with a group of 8th grade
students to excite them about potential futures in design. He has
worked as a Community Service Fellow at the United Teen Equality Center
(UTEC) in Massachusetts, a “by teens, for teens multicultural safe
haven for youth development and organising.” Here he worked as a
project designer with the UTEC youth on a renovation and addition to a
recently acquired historic church, transforming it into a new youth
centre building. The scale of this project was in excess of five
million dollars. Dk was also instrumental in connecting GSD students to
a community project to design and assist in the construction of a new
multipurpose community centre in Khayelitsha, South Africa. He has
represented the GSD at various conferences and recently organised a
symposium, FuturePresent, an initiative at the GSD to increase
diversity in the design professions.
Caroline Lucas, MEP
Caroline has been a Green Party MEP for South East England since 1999.
She’s a Member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and
Food Safety whose work has included amending legislation to strengthen
the case against GM crops, pushing for stricter controls on the
regulation of chemicals, leading on a Parliament report designed to
reduce the impact of aviation on climate change and calling for the
precautionary principle to be a priority when it comes to environmental
and human health. As a Member of the Committee on International Trade
her recent work includes being rapporteur for a report on EU/China
Trade relations. Caroline is also President of the Globalisation
Intergroup and a Member of the European Parliament’s delegation to
Palestine. Her other areas of expertise include local food,
demilitarisation of the EU and animal welfare. Recent publications
include the pamphlet Taking the Cons out of the Constitution, a report,
Fuelling the Food Crisis – The Impact of Peak Oil on Food Security, and
Green Alternatives to Globalisation: a manifesto co-authored with Mike
Woodin.
Sarah Ebanja (Discussion Chair)
Chair, Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust; and Deputy Chief Executive and Group Director, London Development Agency
Sarah joined the LDA in October 2006. Her current responsibilities
include the LDA’s role in place making regeneration through the design
and development of its land interests and other opportunities. Sarah’s
brief will be changing in September 2008 and she will lead the Agency’s
work with regards to Skills, Youth and Jobs (via Business Growth).
Prior to joining LDA Sarah spent 5 years as Islington Council’s lead
chief officer for all matters relating to the £700 million + mixed-use
Arsenal Development scheme the centre-piece of which is the new
Emirates Stadium and which also includes 3,000 new homes, 30,000+ sq
metres of business space and a state of the art Waste & Recycling
facility.
