Home Secretary the Right Honourable Theresa May

Home Secretary the Right Honourable Theresa May paid a most welcome visit to see the work of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust earlier in the year.

On arrival at the centre, the Home Secretary was greeted by Doreen Lawrence OBE, and Trust Managing Director, Paul Anderson-Walsh. Following a tour of the centre, she meet with staff and participants of a number of Trust programmes, including recipients of the Trust’s architecture bursary programme.

The Home Secretary was also able to see the preparations for the Trust’s open evening, ‘Switch On’ which was attended by local residents, partners and supporters of the Trust in celebration of it’s achievements. The centre was specially illuminated by lighting design students from Rose Bruford College in Bromley.

“It was a pleasure to meet the staff and young people at the Stephen Lawrence Centre today. The commitment and enthusiasm of everyone involved with the centre makes a real difference to the lives of those who use their services.” Home Secretary Rt. Hon Theresa May

The Stephen Lawrence Centre, in Deptford, South East London delivers a varied creative and employability programmes both to the community and across the UK. The Trust aims to provide opportunities & access to people from disadvantaged communities enabling them to realize their potential and promote cultural awareness and integration.  Historically the Trust has done this by promoting diversity in architecture and urban design and to tackle the barriers young face in educational advancement and achievement. This commitment is born from Stephen Lawrence’s dream of improving the UK’s inner cities by becoming an architect. This dream was taken away when he was murdered in 1993 at the age of 18.

Doreen Lawrence OBE, Director of the Trust said “We are honoured that the Home Secretary was able to find time in her busy schedule to visit us at the Stephen Lawrence Trust. The centre aims to be a welcoming space for the whole community and a centre of excellence where young people can be inspired, challenged and learn new skills which could transform their future.”

“It was a privilege to be able to welcome the Home Secretary to the Centre.  We are encouraged by her commitment to the work we are involved in her at the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.”
