25-Years-Of-Stephen's-Legacy

25 years

2018 marks 20 years since the Trust’s foundation, and 25 years since Stephen’s death.  We want to make it a celebration of his life and a chance to grow our work and secure his legacy.

In addition to building on our successful programmes, like Building Futures and our schools programmes, we also have exciting plans to launch a number of new programmes and activities, including:

  • The formal launch of our Active Citizens programme, bridging the gap between young people in disadvantaged communities and the police. Through the programme we will be working in partnership with Second Wave Youth Arts, providing leadership development and training to a group of 36 motivated young people representing the diversity of racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups in Lewisham. The goal of the programme is to strengthen and develop personal leadership of the young leaders within the BAME community in Lewisham.

  • We will be working with Historic England on their Enriching the List project.  We will be getting young people excited about the influence that the environment around them has on how people live, the significance of historic building and places in our shared heritage, and how they can play a role in shaping their local community. You can sign up here.

  • Opening ‘YourSpace’, which will utilise the wonderful space in the Stephen Lawrence Centre to nurture talent by providing new start-ups and entrepreneurs with affordable spaces to develop their ideas.

  • Launching our Friends scheme, to keep our supporters more in touch with our work and provide opportunities to hear about it first hand at our events.

We will also be commemorating Stephen at a Memorial Service in April, and at the Stephen Lawrence Memorial Lecture in September.  Although the lecture is held every year around the time of Stephen’s birthday, this year we are working to make it a particularly special occasion, including displaying work from the many alumni that the Trust has supported in his name over the last 20 years.  Tickets are open to all, so watch this space!

We are particularly delighted that for the first time ever we have ten runners raising money for the Trust in the Virgin Money London Marathon and ten in The Big Half.  You can read their stories and sponsor them here.  We’ll be posting updates on their training on Twitter – look out for the hashtag #StephensTeam – as well as following their progress on the big day.

Although the Trust has a high profile and is providing life-changing opportunities to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, we do not receive any government funding and are dependent on the generosity of our donors.  This year we are running a fundraising campaign that will help us secure and grow our programmes in the future.  You can donate here.

We hope that you will be as excited about what we are doing over the coming year as we are, and we will be updating this page with more details of events and activities as we have them.  In the meantime, you can keep up with our news as it happens by following us on Twitter @S_LawrenceTrust and Facebook @StephenLawrenceCharitableTrust.  We would love it if you would also help us spread the word by liking and sharing our posts!
