The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust

As an educational charity, our mission is to promote diversity in architecture and associated professions, improve the educational achievements of black and ethnic-minority students, and help young people find pathways out of poverty into sustainable, rewarding careers in architecture, building construction and other fields associated with urban design and regeneration.

Our mission has three parts:

Youth - We build communities by investing in young people. We encourage them to rediscover their dreams, raise their expectations and rebuild their self-esteem by getting involved in urban regeneration.

Creativity - We build understanding by encouraging schools, colleges and other educational institutions to look at their pupils with fresh eyes, take a broader view of personal development, and promote diversity.

Urban Design - We build business by helping young people develop the skills our urban design and construction industries need for sustainable regeneration driven by an empowered, enthusiastic local workforce.

Stephen Lawrence dreamed of becoming an architect so that he could influence the design of inner cities "from within". Unusually, he wanted to be an architect in his own community. Stephen's dreams were cut short by his murder in 1993.

The Trust seeks to make Stephen's dreams a reality for others by opening up the architectural and related professions to Britain's most disadvantaged young people. The Trust does its work by awarding bursaries to young people who want to train as architects or construction specialists, by liaising between schools and construction companies, by presenting to schools and educational institutions, and by working with the government to find new ways to build communities with self-respect, and to regenerate urban areas.
